Parapodium

The Parapodium is a prefabricated standing frame worn over the clothes. it consists of a spring-loaded shoe clamp, aluminium uprights, a foam knee block and back and chest panels. The Parapodium has proved to be a useful device for allowing paraplegics to become independently mobile.

It usually takes a few lessons to learn to walk. To initiate gait the person has to swing slightly along horizontal axis. swinging accompanies all steps. it decreases load on the activated leg and enables its movement without a friction between the foot and the floor.

The user has to press and pull the leavers while walking. Hands are free when the user is standing. Specially designed and patented mechanisms enable the user to make turns. Legs turn around the vertical axis which pass through the hip joints. The Parapodium allows the user to feel completely safe while maintaining a stable position during standing and walking.

Normally we change our position several times a day from seated to standing and walking. The Parapodium gives the individual affected by paralysis the opportunity to do the same.

The Parapodium has many benefits:

  • Reducing muscular spasms
  • Improving respiratory system
  • Improving cardiovascular function and thermoregulation
  • Improving function of internal organs
  • Preventive treatment of bedsores
  • Safe and comfortable standing with locomotion
  • Active rehabilitation
