The need to reduce risk of secondary impairments such as cardio-respiratory disease, systemic dysfunction, metabolic alterations and loss of muscular function is highlighted by the World health Organisations model of disability (Noreau and Shepard 1995) This is addressed at the Centre through a combination of prescribed exercise. Aerobic capabilities are improved through combined arm and leg cycle ergometry and treadmill therapy. Combined arm and leg cycle ergometry Synchronous arm and leg drive enables clients with dysfunctional upper or lower limbs, left side or right side paralysis to improve aerobic capabilities through 'whole body' workouts. Heart rate, blood pressure and Borg's rate of perceived exertion are constantly monitored throughout the exercise programme. We can also use FES assited leg ergometry with our Hasomed FES system Concept 2 rowing Adapted rowing using a concept 2 rowing machine, with or without FES (depending on functional ability) improve aerobic capabilities through 'whole body' workouts FES rowing using Hasomed system Improving lung function The Power-breathe can also be prescribed as part of the programme to assist in improving lung function through specific training for inspiratory muscles when respiratory function is poor. Lung function is monitored through peak and force expiratory flow rates using the Vital graph PEF/FEV flow meter.
